The Hypocrisy of Secular Iranian Muslims: Alcohol, Fornication, Drugs—But No Pork?

By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Christian Conservative LDS Priest

Growing up in both Iran and the Iranian diaspora, I have seen firsthand the contradictions of so-called "secular" Iranian Muslims—people who claim to reject the oppressive doctrines of Islam yet selectively follow certain Islamic taboos, particularly the ban on eating pork. These same people drink alcohol, fornicate, use drugs, and engage in countless other "haram" (forbidden) activities, yet they refuse to eat pork as if it were some unforgivable sin. This hypocrisy exposes the deep-rooted Islamic programming that still shackles their minds, even when they claim to be free from religious control.

The Selective Morality of Secular Iranian Muslims

In Iran, the consumption of alcohol is officially illegal under Islamic law, yet Iran is one of the largest consumers of black-market liquor in the Middle East. The Islamic Republic enforces brutal punishments for drinking, yet the ruling class, wealthy elites, and everyday secular Iranians all drink in secret. A report by the Iranian Anti-Drug Committee estimated that over 200 million liters of alcohol are smuggled into Iran annually, despite the risk of flogging or imprisonment for being caught with it (IranWire, 2021). The hypocrisy is undeniable—if you claim to be a Muslim yet drink in defiance of Islam, why still uphold its dietary restrictions?

Sexual promiscuity and fornication are equally rampant among secular Iranian Muslims. The very same people who condemn the hijab and gender segregation in Iran are the ones who engage in pre-marital relationships, extramarital affairs, and prostitution—all punishable by death under Islamic law. A study in 2014 found that 60% of young Iranian couples engaged in premarital sex despite it being officially illegal under Sharia (BBC Persian, 2014).

And then there’s drug use, a massive epidemic in Iran. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Iran has one of the highest rates of opium addiction in the world, with an estimated 2.8 million Iranians suffering from drug addiction (UNODC, 2017). Yet, many of these same individuals who drink, fornicate, and use drugs will still refuse to eat pork, citing Islamic purity laws.

Why the Hatred of Pork? The Islamic Indoctrination Runs Deep

So why do so many secular Iranian Muslims reject Islamic law when it comes to their lifestyle choices but hold on to the pork taboo? The answer is clear: deep-seated Islamic programming. Many Iranians, even if they claim to reject Islam, have been mentally conditioned to view pork as filthy and impure—not out of any rational or scientific reasoning, but purely due to Islamic doctrine.

This is the same kind of cult-like indoctrination that leads Muslims to believe they must pray in Arabic, face Mecca, and follow an Arab book written 1,400 years ago by men who never even knew them. Islam was forced onto Iran through Arab imperialism, yet many Iranians, despite their secularism, still cling to its superstitions.

Historically, before the Arab-Islamic conquest of Iran, pork was not seen as an unclean food. The pre-Islamic Zoroastrians, Scythians, Medes, and Persians all ate pork, hunted wild boars, and even revered dogs—another animal vilified by Islam. The Islamic Arabs sought to erase Persian customs and replace them with Islamic-Arabic purity laws, banning pork and enforcing their dietary restrictions. Yet, over 1,400 years later, some Iranians still irrationally obey this rule while ignoring everything else.

The Psychological Chains of Islam

The refusal to eat pork, even among atheist, agnostic, and secular Iranians, reveals the power of cultural Islam—a phenomenon where individuals reject Islamic faith but still adhere to its ingrained cultural taboos. This is no different than those who claim to be "cultural Muslims" yet refuse to identify as anything else, fearing the stigma of apostasy even when they no longer believe in Allah.

Iranian secularists will mock mullahs, drink whiskey, sleep around, and gamble, yet when you put a piece of bacon in front of them, suddenly their Islamic upbringing kicks in: "No! That's haram!"

This hypocrisy is not just about pork—it’s about mental slavery. Many Iranians still subconsciously submit to Islamic conditioning, even while believing they have broken free from it. Islam does not just impose rules; it rewires the mind, making even ex-Muslims and secularists unable to fully escape its grip.

Breaking Free from the Islamic Mindset

If Iranians want true secular freedom, they must completely reject Islamic doctrine—not just selectively obey it. Picking and choosing which haram rules to follow while ignoring others is intellectual dishonesty. If you reject Islamic laws on drinking, fornication, and drugs, then you should have no issue eating pork. Otherwise, you are still mentally enslaved to Islam, even if you think you are free.

True freedom for Iranians means:
Rejecting Islam completely—not just in practice, but in mentality.
Embracing pre-Islamic Persian identity—where pork, dogs, and freedom were part of our culture.
Acknowledging that Islam is an imposed Arab imperialist ideology—not an Iranian one.
Realizing that selective obedience to Islam only proves its continued control over your mind.

It’s time for secular Iranians to break the chains once and for all. Either fully submit to Islam, or reject it entirely—but don’t be a hypocrite. If you can drink alcohol, fornicate, and do drugs, then you can eat bacon. Otherwise, you’re still mentally Muslim, whether you admit it or not.

Final Thoughts

This article is a call for intellectual honesty. If secular Iranian Muslims want to truly break free, they must reject all of Islam’s control, not just the parts that are convenient. Otherwise, they remain its slaves—whether they wear the hijab or not.

It’s time to leave Islam behind. Completely.
