What Heavy Metal Bands Are Pro-Christian in the History of Music?

By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Former Pagan, Christian Conservative LDS Priest

As a proud Iranian-American who has walked through various ideological and spiritual landscapes, from my time as a former Muslim and a pagan to becoming a devout Christian, I have always had a profound connection to music. Heavy metal, a genre often associated with rebelliousness, darkness, and anti-establishment sentiment, is an unlikely place to find expressions of Christian faith. Yet, throughout the history of heavy metal music, many bands have boldly incorporated Christian messages into their music, proving that the genre is not bound by its often misunderstood reputation.

Heavy metal, in all its loud and aggressive glory, has been an outlet for personal expression, and many musicians have used this platform to reflect their Christian beliefs. Bands within the Christian metal subgenre, as well as others with Christian themes, have demonstrated that faith can be an integral part of the metal scene.

1. Stryper

Stryper is one of the most well-known Christian metal bands, having made waves in the 1980s with their blend of glam metal and Christian messages. Formed in 1983, the band wore their faith on their sleeves, literally, with their iconic yellow and black outfits. Their lyrics often conveyed messages of hope, redemption, and salvation, offering an alternative to the party-centric, often hedonistic themes of the mainstream metal scene. Stryper’s album To Hell with the Devil (1986) became a commercial success and remains one of the most prominent Christian metal albums to date.

2. Petra

Often considered pioneers of Christian rock and metal, Petra formed in the early 1970s. While they started in a more rock-oriented direction, Petra's later albums, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, leaned more heavily into the metal genre. Their music was built around themes of evangelism and faith in Christ. Songs like "Judas' Kiss" and "Beyond Belief" display not just excellent musicianship but a clear devotion to Christian principles.

3. Striper

Although Stryper is often singled out as the biggest Christian band in the metal world, Tourniquet is another group worth mentioning. Formed in the late 1980s, the band was rooted deeply in Christian faith, tackling subjects like addiction, salvation, and biblical morality. They were known for their technical prowess, often incorporating progressive and thrash elements into their sound.

4. Delirious?

Although more commonly associated with Christian rock than metal, Delirious?’s influence on the Christian music scene cannot be understated. The British band emerged in the 1990s and began blending elements of worship music with alternative rock and metal influences, particularly in albums like Kingdom of Comfort and Mezzamorphis. Their lyrics focused on faith, healing, and the grace of God, while their music offered a unique fusion of worship with rock music.

5. Demon Hunter

One of the more recent bands to gain a following in the Christian metal scene is Demon Hunter. Formed in 2000, they have incorporated elements of metalcore and hard rock, becoming a notable presence in the genre. Their music regularly explores themes of spiritual struggle, salvation, and personal redemption, with lyrics that are unashamedly Christian. Songs like "Not Ready to Die" and "The Heart of a Graveyard" combine intense metal with a strong faith-based message.

6. Blind Guardian

While not explicitly Christian, Blind Guardian is a German power metal band that has been highly influenced by Christian themes in their works. Their early albums often contained references to biblical stories, such as "The Bard's Song," which features an allegorical tale about morality and the human condition, a theme that resonates with Christian theology.

7. Theocracy

Theocracy is another modern band that has emerged in the Christian metal genre, and they are often referred to as one of the most talented and theologically grounded bands in the Christian metal scene. Their lyrics are saturated with biblical themes and preach a message of faith in God’s sovereignty. Albums like As the World Bleeds are not just impressive for their musicality but for the depth of their Christian content.

8. Holy Soldier

Another classic Christian metal band, Holy Soldier, was formed in the 1980s and achieved a cult following for their melodic metal sound and strong Christian lyrics. Songs like "Eyes of a Child" and "My Friend" convey clear Christian messages, and their self-titled debut album remains a touchstone for Christian metal enthusiasts.

9. Iced Earth

While Iced Earth is not a Christian band per se, some of their work, particularly the album The Glorious Burden, explores Christian themes. This concept album centers on key moments in history, including battles of faith and courage, and presents a nuanced and respectful view of Christian history. The title track, "The Glorious Burden," references themes of sacrifice and redemption, important elements in Christian teachings.

Conclusion

As someone who has navigated various belief systems in my life, including the intense spiritual transformation from being an ex-Muslim to a Christian conservative, I understand the power of music to reflect personal journeys. Heavy metal, with its raw energy, emotional intensity, and often subversive nature, provides an ideal medium for exploring deep themes, including those of faith, struggle, and redemption.

The Christian metal bands mentioned above prove that the genre is not monolithic. Heavy metal can be a vehicle for faith, as much as it can be a means of exploring darker, more rebellious themes. For fans of the genre who are also devoted Christians, these bands provide a message of hope and redemption in a world that is often filled with chaos and despair.
