In May 2023, Daniel Penny, a former Marine, was involved in a fatal incident aboard a New York City subway where he restrained Jordan Neely, a man who was reportedly acting erratically and threatening passengers. The incident resulted in Neely's death, which triggered protests and calls for justice from various leftist groups. However, the situation is far more complicated than it may seem at first glance.
Penny's actions were initially framed as an act of vigilantism, a term often used by the media to demonize those who seek to protect themselves or others in a moment of crisis. But upon further investigation, it became clear that Penny’s decision was made under extreme pressure in an environment where a perceived threat could endanger many lives. A former Marine, Penny likely understood the importance of preserving life in such situations. He may have made a judgment call that was ultimately tragic but not malicious.
What followed, however, was something more insidious—a concerted effort by leftist anarchist groups to use this incident as a rallying cry for their cause. In our modern era, leftist groups have become increasingly emboldened, using every incident to further their narrative of victimhood and their disdain for the rule of law. Their tactics have increasingly turned toward violence, as demonstrated by the numerous riots, looting, and insurrection attempts that followed Penny’s incident. From the Black Lives Matter riots to the January 6th insurrection, we have seen a clear pattern of destruction with no regard for the rule of law.
