The Case of Daniel Penny: A Stand Against Leftist Anarchist Riots and Insurrection

By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Socialist, Former Democrat, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Christian Conservative LDS Priest

The case of Daniel Penny has stirred up a national debate on the intersection of self-defense, social justice, and the growing tide of leftist anarchist movements in America. As someone with a background in political activism, religious reform, and as an Iranian-American who has experienced firsthand the chaos of ideological movements that push society toward division and violence, I find myself reflecting deeply on what transpired with Penny and the subsequent reactions from leftist factions.

In May 2023, Daniel Penny, a former Marine, was involved in a fatal incident aboard a New York City subway where he restrained Jordan Neely, a man who was reportedly acting erratically and threatening passengers. The incident resulted in Neely's death, which triggered protests and calls for justice from various leftist groups. However, the situation is far more complicated than it may seem at first glance.

Penny's actions were initially framed as an act of vigilantism, a term often used by the media to demonize those who seek to protect themselves or others in a moment of crisis. But upon further investigation, it became clear that Penny’s decision was made under extreme pressure in an environment where a perceived threat could endanger many lives. A former Marine, Penny likely understood the importance of preserving life in such situations. He may have made a judgment call that was ultimately tragic but not malicious.

What followed, however, was something more insidious—a concerted effort by leftist anarchist groups to use this incident as a rallying cry for their cause. These groups, who are often more interested in creating chaos than solving societal issues, seized upon the incident to promote an agenda of defunding the police, dismantling societal order, and inflaming divisions within the country. Instead of acknowledging the complexity of the situation, they sought to capitalize on it to further their radical cause.

I have seen this kind of manipulation firsthand. During my years in leadership within the Muslim community—first as Executive Director of CAIR-Columbus and then as President of the Muslim Forum of Utah—I witnessed how organizations could twist events to fit an ideological narrative. In both cases, I experienced the way leftist ideologies hijacked local movements to fuel division and resentment, much like we see with the anarchists in this situation.

But Penny’s case also highlights a deeper issue that many of us are facing in America today: the collapse of law and order. Anarchist movements have long sought to destabilize society by dismantling the very institutions that provide security and protection for everyday citizens. The political left, influenced by radical elements, has allowed this growing insurrection to fester, leading to a profound lack of respect for law enforcement and personal safety. This breakdown of societal norms is dangerous, not just for individuals like Penny who act in self-defense but for all of us who depend on order to maintain our livelihoods and peace of mind.

Moreover, Penny's situation underscores an essential truth that many on the left refuse to acknowledge: the necessity of self-defense. I, too, have felt the need to protect myself and my community from external threats. As a former pagan, a once-vegan, and a member of the Freemason brotherhood, I understand the importance of strength and personal agency in times of crisis. To label someone like Daniel Penny as a villain for doing what he believed was necessary for survival is to betray the very principles that make America a beacon of freedom and justice.

In our modern era, leftist groups have become increasingly emboldened, using every incident to further their narrative of victimhood and their disdain for the rule of law. Their tactics have increasingly turned toward violence, as demonstrated by the numerous riots, looting, and insurrection attempts that followed Penny’s incident. From the Black Lives Matter riots to the January 6th insurrection, we have seen a clear pattern of destruction with no regard for the rule of law.

It is important to recognize that we cannot allow these radical forces to control the narrative or the direction of our country. The principles of self-defense, individual responsibility, and respect for law and order must prevail if we are to maintain a just society. Daniel Penny is not guilty of murder; he is guilty only of trying to protect those around him in a terrifying and unpredictable situation. And yet, he now faces the ire of those who have long abandoned the ideals of justice in favor of chaos.

As an Iranian-American, I have seen firsthand how radical movements can tear apart societies, whether it’s the Iranian Revolution or the rise of Islamism in the Middle East. I’ve witnessed how quickly those in power can manipulate narratives to serve their own agenda, leaving ordinary people to suffer the consequences. The leftist anarchist response to the Daniel Penny case is just one example of how the political left has become an agent of division, insurrection, and chaos, rather than a force for unity and justice.

In conclusion, we must reject the dangerous narrative pushed by leftist anarchists and recognize that true justice requires a commitment to law and order, personal responsibility, and the preservation of life. As a Christian conservative and former leader in the Muslim community, I understand the importance of protecting our communities from radical ideologies that seek to destabilize everything we hold dear. We must stand firm in our commitment to these principles, or risk losing the very freedoms that define America.
