Erdogan’s Neo-Ottoman Ambitions: A Threat to Freedom, Liberty, and Global Security

The modern Republic of Turkey, once a secular state striving for modernization under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is now at a crossroads under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His Islamist authoritarianism, neo-Ottoman aspirations, and aggressive Pan-Turkist ideology are not only eroding the freedoms of the Turkish people but are also endangering global stability. Erdogan's policies are pushing Turkey towards an Islamist resurgence, and his neo-imperialist ambitions are fueling dangerous narratives, including historical revisionism, that have far-reaching consequences.

The Dismantling of Secularism and Freedom in Turkey

Erdogan has systematically dismantled the secular institutions that Atatürk established to modernize Turkey. His policies have suppressed free speech, imprisoned journalists, and curtailed judicial independence. These actions are not only a direct assault on the liberties of the Turkish people but also set a dangerous precedent for Islamist governance globally. Erdogan’s use of Islam as a political tool mirrors tactics seen in regimes like Iran’s Islamic Republic, where religion is weaponized to silence dissent and consolidate power.

Islamist Resurgence and Turkish Support for ISIS

Under Erdogan’s tenure, Turkey has been accused of turning a blind eye—or even covertly supporting—ISIS fighters during the height of their reign of terror. Numerous reports have implicated Turkish officials in facilitating the transit of ISIS fighters and allowing the smuggling of oil, a vital revenue stream for the terrorist group. This complicity underscores the danger Erdogan poses not just to his nation but to the world. Islamist militancy thrives when leaders like Erdogan prioritize ideological gains over international peace and security.

Neo-Ottoman and Pan-Turkist Ambitions

Erdogan's vision extends beyond Turkey’s borders. His neo-Ottoman rhetoric glorifies the Ottoman Empire’s Islamic hegemony and territorial expansion, signaling a desire to reassert Turkish dominance in regions once controlled by the Ottomans. This ideology, paired with Pan-Turkist aspirations, aims to unify Turkic peoples across Central Asia and beyond under a single cultural and political umbrella. This has led to bizarre claims in Turkish nationalist circles, such as the assertion that ancient Iranic peoples like the Scythians were "Turks."

This historical revisionism is more than an academic annoyance—it is a calculated attempt to co-opt and erase the heritage of other nations to bolster Turkey’s nationalist and Islamist narratives. Such distortions sow discord among ethnic groups and undermine efforts for genuine historical understanding and reconciliation.

Threats to Global Stability

Erdogan’s ambitions have led to aggressive foreign policies, including military interventions in Syria, Libya, and Azerbaijan, as well as provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean. These actions destabilize already fragile regions and antagonize NATO allies. His alliances with Islamist groups and authoritarian regimes further reveal his disregard for democratic principles and international norms.

Furthermore, Erdogan's manipulation of the Turkish diaspora to promote his ideology poses challenges for countries with significant Turkish populations. His influence campaigns aim to polarize communities and advance his Islamist and nationalist agendas, undermining the social cohesion of host nations.

A Call to Action

As an Iranian-American who has seen the devastating effects of Islamist governance in Iran and its exportation to other parts of the world, I recognize the warning signs in Erdogan’s Turkey. The international community, including the United States, must address this growing threat by supporting Turkish dissidents, promoting secularism, and countering Erdogan’s propaganda. The freedom-loving Turks deserve a leader who upholds their liberties, respects their diverse heritage, and fosters peace rather than conflict.

Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman dreams and Pan-Turkist fantasies are not just Turkey’s problem—they are a global concern. The world must not stand idly by as Erdogan erodes Turkey’s secular foundations and enables the resurgence of Islamist extremism.
