The Woke Cult: A Detailed Analysis of Its Ideologies
By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Christian Conservative LDS
The concept of "wokeness" has taken root in modern culture and politics with such force that it is now less of a movement and more of an ideology with near-religious fervor. Today, “woke” implies a rigid adherence to progressive social, political, and cultural doctrines that often contradict traditional values, individual freedoms, and moral convictions. This article aims to delve into the many sub-ideologies that have coalesced to form what I refer to as the "Woke Cult." Through my own journey—from an Iranian-American ex-Muslim, former vegan, former Democrat, and former socialist to a conservative Christian—I’ve observed how this cluster of ideologies has disrupted discourse, discouraged diversity of thought, and created a society hostile to foundational principles of liberty and respect.
1. Identity Politics
At its core, the Woke Cult thrives on identity politics, an ideology that reduces individuals to labels such as race, gender, or sexual orientation rather than treating them as unique, complex people. Rather than promoting unity, this approach breeds division by encouraging individuals to see themselves first and foremost as members of a particular oppressed or oppressor group. The identity politics framework has permeated every corner of society, from academia to entertainment, encouraging people to prioritize their identity over personal character and achievement. This framework is integral to wokeness, as it enables people to make sweeping generalizations about others based on immutable characteristics rather than personal merit.
2. Critical Race Theory (CRT)
Critical Race Theory (CRT) is an academic theory that has evolved into a full-blown societal ideology within the woke movement. CRT argues that racism is systemic and ingrained within every aspect of society, effectively making it inescapable. Rather than seeking a colorblind society where individuals are judged on their merits, CRT insists on race-based analysis and activism. It promotes a worldview where individuals are divided into “oppressor” and “oppressed” categories solely based on race, with white people often labeled as perpetual oppressors. In its extreme, CRT fosters resentment and guilt rather than genuine understanding and reconciliation.
3. Radical Feminism
Radical feminism within the woke movement goes beyond the quest for gender equality and instead demonizes men as inherently oppressive. This version of feminism encourages viewing gender through an adversarial lens, creating a “battle of the sexes” mentality where men are seen as privileged and women as perpetual victims. This ideology also tends to dismiss traditional values and denigrate those who choose to embrace family and motherhood, thereby sidelining women who do not fit the narrative of perpetual struggle against patriarchy.
4. Gender Ideology
The woke ideology embraces an extreme form of gender theory that rejects biological sex in favor of a fluid concept of gender. In its most radical form, gender ideology promotes the belief that gender is entirely a social construct, allowing for countless gender identities and challenging the idea that sex and gender are inherently tied. This ideology has deeply impacted public institutions, especially in education, where children are often encouraged to explore their gender identities at young ages. This movement undermines traditional understandings of biology, leading to conflicts in spaces such as sports, where biological males and females compete in the same categories due to self-identification.
5. Queer Theory
Queer Theory, a branch of woke ideology, seeks to dismantle what it calls the "heteronormative" structures of society. This theory questions the legitimacy of heterosexual relationships as the norm and argues that all sexual orientations and identities should be equally validated and normalized. At its core, Queer Theory seeks to challenge and disrupt the cultural assumptions about sex, love, and relationships, often pushing boundaries that many find destabilizing to social and family structures.
6. Environmental Alarmism
While caring for the environment is a shared concern, the Woke Cult’s version of environmentalism adopts an alarmist and sometimes apocalyptic tone, framing climate change as an imminent existential threat. It often disregards practical solutions and favors drastic measures that can undermine economic stability and individual freedoms. This form of environmentalism, sometimes labeled “eco-radicalism,” calls for sweeping societal changes that include depopulation, carbon taxes, and strict regulations that impact the average person while being lenient on global corporations and governments.
7. Socialism and Anti-Capitalism
Socialism and anti-capitalism are central tenets of the woke ideology, often portrayed as the path toward social justice and equity. However, this brand of socialism is anti-free-market and promotes a system that redistributes wealth not based on merit but on identity and class oppression. This ideology has led to calls for policies such as universal basic income, government-controlled healthcare, and wealth redistribution. Anti-capitalist sentiment dismisses the value of entrepreneurship, free enterprise, and individual responsibility—principles that have been foundational to economic success and personal freedom in the West.
8. Anti-Police and Abolitionism
The “Defund the Police” movement is a natural extension of the woke ideology’s disdain for traditional law enforcement. Within the Woke Cult, police are viewed as agents of systemic oppression, especially against marginalized communities. Rather than reform, this ideology often promotes complete abolition of the police, calling for alternative “community-based” safety measures, despite limited evidence of their effectiveness. This ideology has led to destabilizing effects on public safety, particularly in urban areas, disproportionately harming the very communities it claims to protect.
9. Cancel Culture
Cancel Culture is the enforcement mechanism of the Woke Cult. It seeks to ostracize and punish individuals who disagree with or question woke doctrines. This ideology leverages social media and institutional power to silence dissent, targeting people for expressing traditional views, making errors in judgment, or failing to adhere to the latest woke orthodoxy. Cancel culture fosters a culture of fear, where people are afraid to speak openly for fear of backlash and losing their livelihood. It is essentially a form of social coercion that mirrors the ideological purges seen in totalitarian regimes.
10. Secular Humanism
Secular humanism in the woke movement rejects the importance of religious belief in public life and aims to replace it with a secular morality that often contradicts traditional Judeo-Christian values. This ideology promotes the notion that human beings can and should create their moral standards without reference to God or religious tradition, leading to an ethical relativism that ignores absolute moral principles. By undermining religious values, secular humanism within the Woke Cult weakens the moral fabric of society, replacing it with an unstable and subjective morality.
Conclusion
The Woke Cult comprises a host of ideologies that collectively aim to deconstruct traditional values, redefine social norms, and silence dissenting voices. Under the banners of “social justice” and “equity,” these ideologies have created an environment where freedom of thought, individual responsibility, and objective truth are sacrificed for conformity to woke dogma. In my journey, I have come to realize that these woke ideologies, far from bringing enlightenment and compassion, lead to a society stripped of its foundations, ultimately leading to division, fear, and instability.
The Woke Cult is not a movement of tolerance and inclusion; it is a rigid orthodoxy that leaves no room for disagreement. As someone who once aligned with many of these ideologies, I’ve seen firsthand how they harm rather than heal, dividing rather than uniting. It is my hope that others will recognize the dangers of the Woke Cult and return to the principles of respect, understanding, and truth.
