The Betrayal of American Values: How Zaytuna Institute, CAIR, and NIAC Undermine the Constitution

America stands as a beacon of freedom, founded on principles of liberty, individual rights, and the rule of law. However, certain organizations operating under the guise of promoting cultural and religious understanding are actively working against the very Constitution that ensures these freedoms. Having once been deeply involved with the Muslim-American political apparatus, including my leadership roles at CAIR-Columbus and the Muslim Forum of Utah, I speak from firsthand experience. Organizations like the Zaytuna Institute, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) do a disservice not only to America but to the communities they claim to represent.

Zaytuna Institute and the Islamist Ideological Agenda

The Zaytuna Institute, co-founded by Hamza Yusuf, presents itself as a center for Islamic education and interfaith dialogue. However, beneath its polished exterior lies a troubling agenda to normalize Islamist political ideology in America. Zaytuna promotes a version of Islam that is fundamentally incompatible with Western democratic principles. For example, Yusuf has publicly expressed admiration for Islamic legal systems that prioritize Sharia over secular law. By advocating for the inclusion of Sharia principles in American jurisprudence, Zaytuna directly challenges the separation of church and state enshrined in the Constitution.

Furthermore, Zaytuna’s curriculum often romanticizes Islamic empires while glossing over the oppressive aspects of those regimes, including their subjugation of religious minorities and women. This selective presentation of history is not education—it is indoctrination. It conditions young Muslims in America to view themselves as part of a global Islamist struggle, rather than as proud and equal participants in the American democratic experiment.

CAIR: The Public Relations Wing of Islamism

My tenure as the Executive Director of CAIR-Columbus opened my eyes to the organization’s true nature. While CAIR claims to be a civil rights group advocating for Muslims in America, its actions tell a different story. CAIR has a long history of defending individuals and groups with links to extremism. For instance, the Holy Land Foundation case revealed CAIR’s connections to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. Instead of condemning Islamist violence unequivocally, CAIR often resorts to deflection and accusations of Islamophobia, a term weaponized to silence legitimate criticism.

CAIR’s focus is not on integrating Muslims into American society as equal citizens. Instead, it fosters a victimhood narrative that alienates Muslims from the broader American community. This divisive rhetoric undermines the unity necessary for a strong, diverse nation and creates a fertile ground for radicalization.

NIAC: The Regime’s Voice in America

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) markets itself as a pro-democracy organization advocating for Iranian Americans. In reality, it functions as a lobbying arm for the Islamic Republic of Iran. NIAC has consistently opposed sanctions on Iran, despite the regime’s egregious human rights abuses and destabilizing activities in the Middle East. NIAC’s leadership often parrots the regime’s talking points, framing any criticism of the Islamic Republic as an attack on Iranian culture or identity.

As an Iranian-American, I find this particularly offensive. The Iranian people have long yearned for freedom from the tyranny of the Islamic Republic. By advocating for policies that benefit the regime, NIAC betrays the aspirations of millions of Iranians and undermines America’s efforts to promote democracy and stability in the region.

The Constitutional Challenge

The common thread among these organizations is their disregard for the foundational principles of the U.S. Constitution. Whether it is Zaytuna’s flirtation with Sharia, CAIR’s defense of Islamist extremism, or NIAC’s alignment with a theocratic regime, these groups prioritize their ideological agendas over the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, but it does not permit any religious group to impose its beliefs on others. The Fourteenth Amendment ensures equal protection under the law, which is incompatible with any system—be it Sharia or the Islamic Republic’s theocracy—that discriminates based on religion, gender, or political affiliation.

A Call to Action

As a former insider, I urge Americans of all backgrounds to scrutinize these organizations critically. While they claim to represent marginalized communities, their actions often undermine the very freedoms that make America a haven for diversity and inclusion. Muslims and Iranians in America deserve better representation—one that upholds the Constitution and fosters genuine integration and mutual respect.

The fight to preserve America’s values begins with vigilance. It is the duty of every citizen to hold organizations accountable when they stray from the principles that make this nation exceptional. Let us unite in defense of the Constitution, ensuring that freedom, justice, and equality remain the cornerstones of American society.
