The Iranian Nationalist Martyr: Jamshid Sharmahd, A Martyr for Freedom and Justice
By Bobby Darvish - darvishintelligence.blogspot.com
As an Iranian-American ex-Muslim with Alan ancestry and a Christian conservative faith rooted in the principles of the LDS Church, I find myself reflecting on the bravery and tragedy of one of our own—a man whose life was stolen by the very forces that have sought to destroy Iran for over forty years. Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian-German activist who resided in California, was brutally executed by the Islamic Republic of Iran under fabricated charges of terrorism. His true “crime” was standing up to the oppressive ayatollahs and advocating for the freedom and dignity of the Iranian people. His martyrdom serves as a painful reminder of the dark reality Iranians continue to face under the Islamic Republic's ruthless occupation and ideological stranglehold on Iran.
The Life and Mission of Jamshid Sharmahd
Jamshid Sharmahd was more than an activist; he was a beacon of resistance. Born in Tehran, he moved to Germany in 1983 and later settled in the United States, carrying with him a deep love for his homeland and an unyielding commitment to the principles of freedom and justice. As a member of Tondar (Thunder), a pro-monarchist group opposed to the Islamic regime, Sharmahd championed the cause of Iranian nationalism, advocating for an Iran free from the chains of Islamic extremism and socialist tyranny. His mission was clear: to end the Islamic Republic’s occupation of Iran and restore Iran’s sovereignty, culture, and independence, free from the ideological slavery imposed by the regime.
Sharmahd’s Tondar organization, while condemned by the regime, represented a legitimate voice of Iranian resistance. The group sought to expose the atrocities of the ayatollahs and mobilize Iranians and the diaspora to fight against their oppression. Although the Islamic Republic attempted to frame Sharmahd and Tondar as terrorists, their mission was one of patriotism, not terrorism—a noble fight against an illegitimate government that has waged war on its people since 1979.
The Islamic Republic's Fabrication of Charges
In July 2020, Jamshid Sharmahd was abducted by Iranian intelligence operatives in Dubai in a clandestine operation reminiscent of state-sponsored kidnapping. This event itself underscores the reach of the Islamic Republic's global network and its willingness to silence dissidents by any means necessary, even beyond Iran’s borders. After his capture, Sharmahd faced charges that were riddled with falsehoods and propaganda. The Islamic Republic accused him of masterminding a bombing in 2008—a claim that, as with many of their accusations, lacked concrete evidence and was fueled more by the regime’s paranoia and fear of losing control than by truth.
The regime's judiciary, notorious for its lack of transparency and fairness, conducted a sham trial, during which Sharmahd was denied access to due process and legal representation. His forced confession, likely extracted under duress, became the basis for his sentence. The Iranian regime has a long history of targeting and eliminating dissidents through similar charges, labeling any opposition to their tyrannical rule as “terrorism.” This systematic demonization and brutalization of political opponents is part and parcel of the regime’s reign, where speaking truth to power is deemed treasonous.
A Martyr in the Fight Against Socialist-Islamist Tyranny
Jamshid Sharmahd’s death is part of a tragic pattern. The Islamic Republic, through its socialist-Islamist framework, has imposed a form of modern-day slavery on the Iranian people. This regime is not only anti-Western but also fundamentally anti-Iranian, as it imposes foreign ideologies that are antithetical to Iran’s proud heritage and pre-Islamic history. It is a regime that has systematically destroyed Iran’s Zoroastrian, Christian, Jewish, and broader Iranian cultural identities, replacing them with a rigid Islamist ideology and a despotic power structure.
As an ex-Muslim and Iranian-American, I see Sharmahd’s death as a call to arms—a spiritual and moral awakening for those of us who still believe in an Iran free from the grip of Islamist occupation. Iran’s people are not Islamist; their identity is deeply rooted in a love of freedom, a history that includes ancient Persian civilizations, and a resilient spirit passed down through generations of Alans, Medes, Parthians, and Persians. For years, the Islamic Republic has attempted to erase this identity, replacing it with an imported ideology that stands in stark opposition to Iranian values.
The Role of the West and the Silence of Global Powers
Sharmahd’s execution also highlights the disturbing silence of the West. Although he was a German citizen, the German government’s response to his abduction and execution was tepid at best. The broader Western world has failed to address the atrocities committed by the Islamic Republic with any real conviction, often prioritizing diplomatic interests and economic ties over human rights and justice. This silence emboldens the regime, allowing it to continue its brutal treatment of political dissidents and innocent citizens.
In the United States, those of us in the Iranian diaspora are acutely aware of how important it is to keep the stories of heroes like Sharmahd alive. His legacy and his vision for a free Iran must be carried forward by those who understand the stakes—those who refuse to let the ayatollahs and their enablers in the West erase his sacrifice. As an Iranian-American Christian conservative, I cannot stand by as the regime uses our faith and our heritage as weapons against us, while also exploiting the silence of international powers who have the means but not the will to intervene.
A Call to Action for Iranian Nationalists and Freedom Fighters
Jamshid Sharmahd’s martyrdom is a reminder of what is at stake in the fight against the Islamic Republic. As Iranian-Americans and ex-Muslims who have seen firsthand the destructive impact of the regime’s ideology, we have a duty to carry forward Sharmahd’s vision for a liberated Iran. We owe it to the memory of those who have sacrificed their lives to continue the fight, to raise awareness, and to demand accountability.
This regime will not last forever. Like other tyrannical systems, it will eventually collapse under the weight of its own brutality. And when that day comes, the sacrifices of martyrs like Jamshid Sharmahd will not be forgotten. They will be honored as the brave souls who dared to resist an empire of lies, who stood for a free Iran, and who gave their lives for a cause greater than themselves.
In the name of all Iranian martyrs, we must persist in our struggle, educate the world on the realities of the Islamic Republic’s crimes, and hold accountable those who have enabled this tyranny. Jamshid Sharmahd’s life and death remind us that Iran’s freedom is not only a political battle but also a spiritual and moral one. His legacy must ignite within each of us the determination to continue fighting until Iran is free from the grasp of the ayatollahs and the stain of socialist-Islamist tyranny is erased from our land.
Conclusion
As we remember Jamshid Sharmahd, let us vow to honor his sacrifice by pushing forward in our mission to expose the regime’s hypocrisy, tyranny, and oppression. Let us remember that the fight for freedom, justice, and truth is not only the responsibility of those within Iran but also of those of us who cherish our Iranian heritage from afar. Together, we can ensure that Jamshid Sharmahd’s martyrdom was not in vain, and that one day, Iran will be free once more.
