Dirlewanger Brigade - Himmler's Convict Legion: A Unit of Infamy

By Bobby Darvish

The Dirlewanger Brigade, also known as the SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger, was a unit of the Waffen-SS during World War II. This notorious brigade was formed in 1940 and was led by Oskar Dirlewanger, a German SS commander and habitual offender, convicted for rape of children and other crimes (1). The unit was composed of convicts, poachers, and other criminals, who were given a chance to redeem themselves by fighting for the Nazi regime.

The Dirlewanger Brigade was known for its brutal and barbaric actions, committing numerous war crimes and atrocities in German-occupied territories during World War II (2). The unit was so notorious that even other Nazi leaders were disgusted by its deeds and behavior. In fact, the Nazi SS itself detested the Dirlewanger Brigade due to its evil actions and the pedophilia of its leader, Oskar Dirlewanger (3).

Despite its infamy, the Dirlewanger Brigade's insignia is still worn by some Nazi battalions in Ukraine today. This is a disturbing trend, as it shows that some groups are still glorifying and emulating the actions of this notorious unit. The Dirlewanger Brigade's history is inextricably linked to the life of its commander, Oskar Dirlewanger, who was known for his sadistic tendencies and was often called the most evil man in the SS (4).

The Dirlewanger Brigade's actions were so vile that it is difficult to write about its excesses even today. The unit was responsible for rape, torture, and mass murder, and its behavior was so reprehensible that it was condemned by other Nazi leaders (5). The brigade's actions in Ukraine were particularly brutal, and its legacy continues to haunt and torment the country to this day (6).

In conclusion, the Dirlewanger Brigade was a unit of infamy that was responsible for some of the most heinous crimes committed during World War II. Its leader, Oskar Dirlewanger, was a pedophile and a sadist who was despised by even other Nazi leaders. The fact that some Nazi battalions in Ukraine still wear the Dirlewanger Brigade's insignia today is a disturbing trend that shows that some groups are still glorifying and emulating the actions of this notorious unit.
