Why I Love Elon Musk and His Vision for Humanity

By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Former Pagan, Christian Conservative LDS Priest

Elon Musk represents the epitome of what humanity can achieve through innovation, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to progress. As an Iranian-American with royal lineage from the Safavid Dynasty, my own journey has taught me the value of hard work, sacrifice, and self-reliance. I see in Musk a kindred spirit who exemplifies these values. This is not a man who inherited his wealth or coasted on privilege. Musk’s life—beginning with his challenging childhood in South Africa—is a testament to the triumph of grit over adversity.

Growing up, I’ve seen firsthand the dangers of entitlement and dependency. Whether under the shadow of Islamic rule in Iran or within the frameworks of socialist ideologies that I once supported, systems that promise everything often fail to deliver the dignity of earned success. Musk’s philosophy—to empower rather than enable—embodies the principle that it is not the job of the wealthy to hand out money. It is, rather, our job to create value for ourselves and others.

Elon Musk’s Humble Beginnings

There is a dangerous myth that billionaires like Musk were handed everything on a silver platter. Musk’s early life could not be further from this stereotype. He left South Africa with little more than his intellect and determination. As an immigrant in Canada and later the United States, he faced poverty and worked grueling hours to fund his education. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, Musk reportedly survived on just a dollar a day, eating hot dogs and oranges to save money. He didn’t let poverty define him; he saw it as a temporary obstacle.

Musk’s rise wasn’t due to nepotism or shortcuts but relentless effort and risk-taking. He taught himself computer programming as a child and later co-founded Zip2, an online business directory, which he sold for nearly $300 million. From there, Musk reinvested his earnings into ventures that would revolutionize industries, including PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and Starlink.

A Visionary for Humanity

What sets Musk apart is his vision. He doesn’t just build businesses; he builds futures. Tesla has redefined the automotive industry, proving that sustainable energy can be both practical and profitable. SpaceX has made space exploration not only possible but increasingly accessible, igniting dreams of interplanetary colonization. Neuralink holds the potential to revolutionize healthcare, while Starlink brings internet connectivity to some of the world’s most remote regions.

These accomplishments are not the product of luck; they are the fruits of audacious goals pursued with relentless focus. Musk’s achievements serve as an antidote to the nihilism and defeatism that plague much of modern society. He proves that we don’t have to settle for the status quo—that human ingenuity can solve even our most daunting challenges.

Hard Work and Personal Responsibility

I relate to Musk’s journey because I have walked my own path of struggle and redemption. As someone who once adhered to the socialist belief that wealth should be distributed rather than earned, I now see the transformative power of personal responsibility. I went to school, worked hard to earn my Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and paid off my student loans. I didn’t wait for handouts; I built a life for myself and my family through dedication and effort.

Musk’s story is an inspiration to anyone willing to put in the work. It is not his job to make us wealthy. He provides opportunities through innovation and industry; it is up to us to seize them. Critics who demand that Musk “do more” with his wealth ignore the fact that his contributions to humanity far exceed monetary charity. By creating jobs, pioneering technologies, and tackling global challenges, Musk uplifts billions of lives.

The Danger of Envy and Entitlement

There is a growing culture of entitlement that seeks to vilify success. Musk’s critics often argue that billionaires should redistribute their wealth directly, but this mindset misunderstands the nature of wealth creation. Wealth isn’t a fixed pie; it’s something that grows through innovation and hard work. By reinvesting his fortune into groundbreaking ventures, Musk creates far more value than he could ever achieve through simple philanthropy.

As a former socialist, I understand the allure of these arguments. They appeal to a sense of fairness but ultimately breed resentment and stagnation. True fairness lies in equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. Musk’s life is proof that opportunity—when coupled with ambition—can lead to extraordinary achievements.

A Call to Action

Elon Musk’s journey challenges all of us to be better, to dream bigger, and to work harder. It’s easy to criticize from the sidelines, but real progress requires courage and effort. Instead of tearing down those who succeed, we should learn from their example.

I commend Elon Musk for his contributions to humanity and his refusal to be deterred by cynics. His life reminds us that greatness is earned, not given. As a Christian conservative and an Iranian-American who values the principles of self-reliance and perseverance, I find Musk’s story deeply inspiring. Let us all take responsibility for our own lives, seize the opportunities before us, and strive to leave the world better than we found it.
