Why Trump Should Deregulate the DMV and Support the Nomadic American Lifestyle
By Bobby Darvish – darvishintelligence.blogspot.com
As a Christian, conservative Iranian-American who has walked a difficult road from a former Muslim, socialist, and vegan to a full-fledged proponent of individual liberties, I've come to a stark realization about the government’s overreach into our daily lives. The DMV or BMV regulations that we face across the United States not only infringe on our basic freedoms but also unjustly burden the American people with excessive taxes and unnecessary inspections. It is high time that these regulations be addressed, deregulated, and reformed, and there is no better time than now for President Donald Trump to take action.
Deregulating Emissions, Smog, and Safety Inspections: A Matter of Constitutional Rights
One of the most frustrating aspects of living in the United States today is the bureaucratic hurdles we face when it comes to vehicle ownership. From emissions inspections and smog checks to safety inspections, the government's involvement in regulating what we do with our vehicles feels more like an infringement on our liberties than a legitimate concern for public welfare. As a Christian conservative, I believe in a limited government that respects the autonomy of its citizens. The U.S. Constitution, after all, does not grant the government the power to regulate the freedom to travel, nor does it empower the state to dictate how we manage our personal vehicles.
In some states, like California, these regulations are not just inconvenient but outright burdensome. For example, emissions checks on vehicles are sold as an effort to protect the environment. But for most working-class Americans, especially those who own older cars or live in areas that aren’t heavily polluted, these checks are nothing more than an unjustified tax. The costs, both financial and in terms of time, are significant. Additionally, these regulations often discourage car ownership and place undue stress on families who need reliable transportation to get to work, school, or other essential places.
I am not against the environment, but I firmly believe that when we talk about limiting freedoms for the sake of "greater good" or "safety," we are treading dangerous waters. We must trust in the wisdom of the American people to make decisions for themselves and their families, not in bureaucratic policies that do little more than pad the pockets of government agencies and contractors.
The Tax Burden: A Burden on Freedom
On top of the unnecessary inspections, the DMV taxes are a constant drain on American citizens. In many states, you are required to pay annual taxes on your vehicle, which is simply an additional burden to an already overtaxed society. This does not even touch on the gas taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes that contribute to the financial drain.
The Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, understood that taxation should be limited and purposeful. The current tax burden is antithetical to the principles laid out in the Constitution. By reducing and ultimately eliminating many of these taxes, especially those tied to vehicle ownership, we can begin to reclaim the freedom that was promised to us. By focusing on reducing taxes and providing more incentives for individuals to invest in their futures, we can see an America that allows its people to flourish.
A Nomadic America: Supporting People Who Live Between States
As someone who spends time living in two states—an aspect of my life that resonates with many who live in multiple regions or on the move—I know that the current system fails to support nomadic lifestyles. Whether due to work, family, or personal preferences, many Americans live in two or more states over the course of the year. However, in our current system, the bureaucracy of DMV registrations, license renewals, and license plate renewals creates an unnecessary headache for these nomadic Americans.
A federal driver’s license and federal vehicle license plate would not only streamline the process but also serve as a recognition of the fact that Americans have the right to live freely and move between states without unnecessary restrictions. This would be a step toward respecting the diverse lifestyles that exist in this country—people who work across state lines, travel often, or simply live the way they choose. We must recognize that nomadic Americans contribute to the economy and our culture in significant ways.
Trump, during his tenure, should prioritize the implementation of a federal driver's license and vehicle registration system that allows people like me, who live in multiple states, to avoid the duplicative process of registering and renewing their vehicles in every state we inhabit. A single, universal license and plate would eliminate the need for multiple registrations, saving time and money for thousands of Americans, while reducing government intervention into our daily lives.
Why Trump Can Lead the Charge
It is clear that President Trump has been a champion of deregulation and reducing government overreach during his time in office. His policies have consistently shown a preference for returning power to the people, and his focus on cutting unnecessary regulations has had tangible benefits for businesses and citizens alike. A bold move to deregulate the DMV processes and support nomadic Americans by creating a federal driver’s license system would only strengthen his legacy as a president who put the rights and freedoms of the American people first.
Trump’s ability to speak to the average American’s frustrations with government overreach makes him the ideal leader to take on these issues. By addressing the burdens placed on everyday Americans by these overbearing regulations, Trump could show that he is truly listening to the people, especially those like myself who feel the weight of these bureaucratic structures every day.
Conclusion
The current system of DMV and BMV regulations is antiquated, excessive, and, frankly, unconstitutional. It infringes upon the rights of Americans to move freely, burdening us with unnecessary taxes, inspections, and regulations. President Trump has the opportunity to lead the way in deregulating these systems, advocating for a federal driver’s license, and reducing taxes so that Americans, particularly those of us who lead nomadic lifestyles, can live more freely. It is time to return to a system that respects the individual liberties that are the cornerstone of this great nation.
Let us reclaim our freedoms—reduce the taxes, remove the inspections, and let Americans be free to live their lives without unnecessary interference.
