The Hidden Bias: How Democrat Socialists Discriminate Against Black Americans and Non-Anglo-Saxon Conservatives
By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Christian Conservative LDS
As a former Democrat, former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, and former Muslim Forum of Utah President, I’ve had firsthand experience with how the Democratic Party and its leftist allies treat those who don’t fit neatly within their ideological mold. I witnessed how, under the guise of "inclusivity" and "social justice," the left often sidelines or outright discriminates against conservative voices—especially when these voices come from Black Americans and other non-Anglo-Saxon backgrounds. This discrimination is not accidental; it’s woven into the fabric of an agenda that views individuals through a narrow, collectivist lens.
For many Black Americans, Latinos, Asians, Middle Easterners, and other minorities who hold conservative views, the political left has little patience. They are either dismissed, vilified, or, ironically, treated as though they are traitors to their own communities. My journey from socialism and the Democratic Party to conservatism has shown me just how deep this intolerance runs. Today, as a Christian conservative, I see the importance of diversity of thought—something that the left claims to celebrate but consistently undermines when individuals dissent from their narratives.
The Left's Betrayal of Black Conservatives
For Black Americans who lean conservative, the experience within leftist spaces can be harsh. Figures like Clarence Thomas, Ben Carson, and Larry Elder are often labeled as “sellouts” or “Uncle Toms” simply because their views diverge from the Democratic Party's. This language reveals an ugly truth: the left's “tolerance” is often conditional. If a Black person opposes the radical aspects of the left’s agenda, they are not merely disagreed with; they are often demeaned and ostracized.
The Democratic Party uses the historical struggles of Black Americans as a political tool, but it fails to support those who pursue empowerment through personal responsibility, faith, and entrepreneurship. According to conservative commentator Candace Owens, “The left has built an entire platform on convincing Black Americans that they are perpetual victims, unable to achieve success without the help of white liberals” (Owens, 2020). This “victimhood” narrative is essential to the left’s control over Black voters. When conservative Black Americans reject this, they expose the left's manipulation, which is why they face such relentless backlash.
Non-Anglo-Saxon Conservatives: A Threat to the Left's Agenda
Beyond Black conservatives, other minorities who advocate conservative values are often disregarded or maligned by the left. As an Iranian-American, I found myself pushed aside when I began to question the left’s stances on issues like family values, religious liberty, and national security. The same left that championed my voice when I was aligned with its ideology grew uncomfortable when I started advocating for traditional values and a strong stance against radical ideologies.
This trend is apparent in the left's approach to Latino and Asian conservatives, who also find their voices minimized. Many Latino and Asian Americans support conservative values that prioritize family, faith, and economic opportunity—values at odds with the left’s social agenda. In fact, recent studies show that Latino voters are increasingly shifting towards the Republican Party, largely due to its emphasis on faith, community, and family (Pew Research Center, 2022). The left’s response to this shift has been one of disdain, labeling Latino conservatives as misguided or even traitorous.
The Weaponization of Identity Politics
The left’s reliance on identity politics is central to understanding its discrimination against non-Anglo-Saxon conservatives. In the leftist framework, individuals are often valued based on their racial or ethnic background rather than their individual beliefs or values. This approach is deeply divisive, reducing people to monolithic stereotypes and assuming that one’s race or ethnicity dictates their political stance.
For Black Americans and other non-Anglo-Saxon conservatives, this means that the left demands conformity to a rigid ideological framework that doesn’t accommodate individual viewpoints. This is evident in the hostile language directed toward minority conservatives, who are frequently attacked as traitors to their race or community. Such language reflects the left’s unwillingness to accept diversity of thought, exposing a contradiction between their proclaimed inclusivity and their actions.
The Hypocrisy of "Tolerance" and "Inclusion"
The Democratic Party and leftist organizations frequently espouse "tolerance" and "inclusion." However, these ideals are often applied selectively. Black, Latino, Asian, and other minority conservatives who hold traditional beliefs are typically excluded from leftist spaces. Conservative Christians, in particular, face harsh criticism, as their faith is often perceived as incompatible with the left's secular agenda.
As a former Muslim leader who converted to Christianity, I’ve seen how the left marginalizes those who embrace Christian values. My experience is not unique. Many conservative Christians of minority backgrounds find that their faith and values are unwelcome in spaces that claim to value diversity. The left’s exclusion of minority conservatives reveals that its true aim is not inclusivity but ideological conformity.
Why the Conservative Movement Welcomes Us
As I transitioned to conservatism, I found a movement that genuinely values individual contributions, regardless of background. Conservative principles prioritize personal responsibility, faith, and family, offering an environment where diversity of thought is respected rather than suppressed. The conservative movement does not demand that individuals abandon their cultural heritage or faith; instead, it celebrates a shared commitment to freedom and moral responsibility.
Organizations like PragerU, BLEXIT, and Turning Point USA actively work to support minority conservatives, helping them navigate a landscape often hostile to their beliefs. Conservative movements understand that America’s strength lies in the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds who share a commitment to the nation's founding principles.
Conclusion
As a former Democrat, former CAIR Executive Director, and former Muslim Forum of Utah President, I am deeply concerned by the left's treatment of minority conservatives. The left’s discriminatory practices against Black Americans, Latinos, Asians, and other non-Anglo-Saxon conservatives contradict its claims of tolerance and inclusion. For those of us who have left the leftist ideology behind, conservatism offers a place of respect, authenticity, and true inclusion.
The path to real unity in America does not lie in the divisive politics of the left. It lies in the conservative principles of individual freedom, family, faith, and a shared commitment to America’s founding values. By embracing these values, we can build a society where all voices are heard, and all individuals are respected.
