The Deceptive Tactics of Islamists on Social Media: Unmasking Lies About Christianity

In the digital age, misinformation spreads faster than wildfire, and social media has become the primary battleground for ideological warfare. As a former Muslim and Islamic leader, I witnessed firsthand how Islamists employ taqiyah—a doctrine permitting deception for self-preservation or the promotion of Islam—to spread falsehoods about Christianity on platforms like Facebook and other social media. These calculated lies are not random but part of a broader strategy to undermine Christian beliefs and sow doubt among believers.

Taqiyah and Its Role in Islamic Propaganda

Taqiyah originates from Quranic and Hadith-based teachings, particularly in contexts of conflict or perceived oppression. While it is often associated with Shia Islam, Sunnis also invoke it under different guises. Islamists use taqiyah in their online discourse to present a sanitized version of Islam while simultaneously distorting Christianity. For example, they claim that:

  1. The Apostle Paul Invented Christianity: This common lie asserts that Paul distorted Jesus’ original teachings, introducing doctrines like the Trinity and salvation by grace.
  2. The Bible is Corrupted: Muslims often argue that the Bible has been altered over time, rendering it unreliable. They contrast this with the Quran, which they falsely claim is unaltered since its revelation.
  3. Jesus Was Only a Prophet: To diminish Christianity’s foundations, Islamists deny Jesus’ divinity and his role as the Savior of humanity.

These lies are strategically packaged and amplified to undermine Christian faith, especially among vulnerable individuals who lack theological grounding.

The Social Media Arsenal

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube serve as megaphones for Islamist propaganda. By exploiting algorithms, they ensure their content reaches wide audiences. Their tactics include:

  • Emotional Manipulation: Sharing cherry-picked verses from the Bible and Quran out of context to confuse readers.
  • Astroturfing: Creating fake profiles to appear as though their ideas have widespread support.
  • Memes and Simplified Narratives: Using eye-catching visuals to propagate lies, knowing that many users won’t fact-check.
  • Targeting Vulnerable Groups: Focusing on disenfranchised Christians or those questioning their faith.

As someone with a background in cybersecurity, I’ve seen these tactics in action. Coordinated campaigns often originate from Islamist organizations or influencers with the explicit intent to recruit, mislead, or destabilize Christian communities.

My Journey Away From These Lies

As a former CAIR-Columbus executive director and Muslim Forum of Utah president, I was once part of a system that perpetuated these narratives. It wasn’t until I critically examined the Quran and compared it to the Bible that I saw the truth. The Bible stood firm as a consistent, divinely inspired text, while the Quran revealed itself as a compilation riddled with contradictions and historical inaccuracies.

For example, the Quran accuses Christians of worshipping three gods (Surah 4:171), a gross misrepresentation of the doctrine of the Trinity. When confronted with these inaccuracies, Muslims on social media often resort to taqiyah, deflecting or twisting words to evade accountability.

How Christians Can Respond

Christians must equip themselves with knowledge to counter these falsehoods effectively:

  1. Learn Christian Apologetics: Familiarize yourself with Biblical theology and historical evidence supporting the faith. Resources like Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel are excellent starting points.
  2. Expose Taqiyah: Highlight the doctrine and its misuse, showing others how it is employed deceptively.
  3. Engage with Truth and Love: While exposing lies, remember to emulate Christ in all interactions. Speak truth with grace, not malice.
  4. Use Technology Wisely: Leverage platforms like YouTube, podcasts, and blogs to share the Gospel and debunk Islamic misinformation.

Conclusion

Islamists are relentless in their efforts to distort Christianity, but their lies are no match for the truth of Christ. As someone who has seen both sides of this ideological conflict, I urge Christians to stand firm and fight back against misinformation with wisdom, faith, and courage. The Apostle Paul said it best: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

We are in a spiritual battle, and the truth of the Gospel is our greatest weapon. Let us use it to shine a light in the darkness of social media propaganda.
