The True Insurrectionists: Democrat Socialists and Their Revolutionary Movements—A Conservative Analysis

The Justice Department’s recent report concerning the January 6th Capitol riots has been a contentious focal point in American politics. Many conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, argue that individuals involved in the riots should be pardoned, citing the disproportionate criminal charges levied against those who simply expressed their dissatisfaction with the 2020 election results. Meanwhile, the Democrats have seized on the events of January 6 as an example of "insurrection," attempting to portray anyone connected to the event as a threat to democracy. However, it is essential to recognize the hypocrisy in this narrative and acknowledge that the real insurrectionists, those who have directly threatened America’s democratic principles, have often been the radical leftists and Democrat socialists who incited and celebrated the violent uprisings in cities such as Seattle, Portland, and others. These movements, like CHAZ and CHOP, were far more dangerous to the fabric of American society and have been conveniently ignored or downplayed by the very same people who accuse conservatives of undermining democracy.

The January 6th Capitol Riots: A Distorted Narrative

The Justice Department’s investigation into the January 6th riot has led to numerous arrests and convictions, with some individuals facing harsh sentences for their roles in breaching the Capitol. The left-wing media, alongside progressive political leaders, have been quick to call the events a "failed insurrection" and a direct threat to the Constitution. However, these same voices have been largely silent on the true scale of insurrection in America—events that transpired in the wake of the George Floyd protests, which were hijacked by leftist extremists and anarchists.

While many of the people who participated in the January 6th riot were indeed misguided in their actions, it is important to note that there was no organized attempt to overthrow the U.S. government on that day. What we saw was a riot, a disturbance fueled by deep political frustration, not an attempt to launch a revolution or seize the government by force. This is a far cry from what transpired in other cities in the months preceding and following January 6th.

The Leftist Insurrection: CHAZ, CHOP, and Violent Uprisings

The summer of 2020 saw a far more alarming example of insurrection, one in which left-wing activists sought to create their own autonomous zones, defying both law and order. In Seattle, the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) and later the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) were established in the heart of the city. These movements were not simply protests—they were radical attempts to overthrow the existing social and political order. In essence, they were an experiment in anarchism, in which the rule of law was replaced by a self-styled "revolutionary" government. The result? Violence, destruction, and loss of life, all while local government leaders failed to take meaningful action.

The CHAZ/CHOP movement was widely praised by many on the far-left, and the media was slow to recognize the true threat posed by these groups. While the media focused on the Capitol riot, they ignored the fact that the CHAZ/CHOP protesters had taken over several city blocks and created a zone where crime, extortion, and violence were rampant. Law enforcement was blocked from entering, and the chaos that ensued led to several deaths and numerous injuries.

Moreover, the socialist leaders and radical left-wing activists associated with these movements openly called for the abolition of the police, the dismantling of capitalist systems, and the redistribution of wealth—goals aligned with the broader aims of socialist and Marxist ideologies. These movements were not isolated incidents but rather the latest chapter in a series of revolutionary actions that sought to dismantle America’s founding principles.

The Hypocrisy of the Left

The hypocrisy of the left is glaring. On one hand, they demand harsh penalties for those involved in the January 6th Capitol riot, while on the other hand, they defend and even celebrate the violent revolutionary actions of left-wing extremists. The same people who scream "insurrection" in the face of a protest that turned into a riot seem to have no problem with the violent destruction of businesses, the takeover of public spaces, and the general chaos wrought by the CHAZ and CHOP movements.

In fact, the Democratic Party has consistently downplayed or outright ignored the dangers posed by these left-wing insurrectionist movements. Prominent figures such as Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, who initially referred to CHAZ as a "summer of love," and other Democrat leaders, have enabled this violence by failing to act decisively to protect their cities. By doing so, they have signaled to radical leftists that violent protests, up to and including the occupation of public spaces, are acceptable tactics in their pursuit of political power.

Donald Trump’s Plan for Pardon and the Double Standard

Donald Trump’s plan to pardon individuals involved in the January 6th riot must be seen within this broader context. While the events of January 6th were wrong, the overreaction and criminal charges brought against many of those involved are disproportionate when compared to the far more severe threats posed by the leftist uprisings throughout 2020. The question remains: why should conservative protesters be treated more harshly than radical leftists who actively sought to undermine and destroy American institutions?

Trump’s suggestion to pardon the individuals arrested for their roles in January 6th is rooted in a belief that the justice system has been weaponized against conservative Americans. Meanwhile, the radical left continues to operate with impunity, further radicalizing young Americans and threatening the stability of our republic.

Conclusion

As an Iranian-American who has witnessed the dangers of radical political movements firsthand, I recognize the importance of understanding the true nature of insurrection. The events of January 6th were certainly a failure, but they were not an existential threat to American democracy. In contrast, the violent movements fueled by left-wing ideologies—movements that have sought to burn down the social order—have posed a much greater threat to the rule of law and the preservation of our liberties. As we look forward, it is critical that we hold all perpetrators of insurrection, regardless of their political alignment, accountable for their actions, and that we restore balance to a justice system that has become increasingly politicized.
