As a former Imam and ex-Muslim who once led CAIR Columbus and the Muslim Forum of Utah, I speak with firsthand authority when I say that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is not merely a “civil rights” organization—it is Hamas’s voice in the United States, functioning as a political, legal, and propaganda arm of the Muslim Brotherhood’s global Islamist network. The American people deserve to know the truth: CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-financing trial in American history—the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) case—and it is long past time they be formally prosecuted and registered as a foreign agent.
The 2008 Holy Land Foundation trial revealed that CAIR was among several U.S.-based Islamist organizations created by the Muslim Brotherhood to support Hamas, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization under U.S. law. This wasn’t a conspiracy theory—it came straight from FBI surveillance, internal memos, and testimony that exposed a clear Hamas support network operating under charitable and advocacy fronts. One document introduced at trial, titled “An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America”, outlined the Muslim Brotherhood's plan to infiltrate and destroy American society from within, and listed CAIR as part of that project (United States v. Holy Land Foundation, 2008).
Despite overwhelming evidence, President Obama’s Justice Department quietly shut down further prosecutions following the HLF trial, choosing political appeasement over national security. That decision was not only irresponsible—it was dangerous. It allowed CAIR to grow unchecked in power, embedding itself in U.S. institutions, media, and government, all while pushing Islamist agendas under the guise of fighting “Islamophobia.” The Obama-era decision must be reversed. The HLF case should be reopened immediately, and CAIR should be prosecuted as a co-conspirator, as the evidence demanded in 2008.
Furthermore, CAIR should be forced to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) for its lobbying activities and its coordination with foreign entities tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. The Emir of Qatar, a major Hamas financier, has supported and hosted Muslim Brotherhood leadership, and CAIR’s links to Qatar and other Islamist regimes deserve full legal scrutiny (Foundation for Defense of Democracies, 2019).
As an Iranian-American who fled the Islamic Republic and knows firsthand how Islamist networks operate, I urge Congress and the Department of Justice to act now. CAIR is not a civil rights group—it is Hamas’s Trojan horse in America. If we truly care about national security, religious freedom, and constitutional values, we must treat it as such.
It’s time to reopen the HLF case, prosecute CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator, and expose the organization for what it truly is: a foreign-backed threat to American freedom.
