As an Iranian-American ex-Muslim, former vegan, former socialist, and a proud Christian conservative member of the LDS Church, I’ve come to value simplicity, reliability, and authenticity in many aspects of my life. These values also extend to my love for motorcycles, particularly the 2009 Harley Davidson Sportster XL883L and XL1200L models, which I am fortunate enough to own and have extensively customized over the years. Both motorcycles have become more than just machines to me; they symbolize freedom, self-expression, and the enduring power of simplicity in a world increasingly dominated by complexity.
A Connection to the Road
For years, I’ve appreciated the rich history and craftsmanship behind Harley Davidson bikes. The 2009 Sportster models, the XL883L and XL1200L, are no exception. These bikes are often overlooked by some riders in favor of bigger, more advanced models, but I have found them to be the perfect balance of power and ease. The simplicity of the Sportster series is something that truly resonates with me. Unlike modern motorcycles that are overrun with complicated technology and unnecessary features, the Sportster bikes offer an uncomplicated, no-nonsense experience that allows me to connect directly with the road.
The XL883L, with its 883cc engine, is an agile and responsive bike. It’s not just for cruising the highways but is versatile enough to handle various riding conditions, from city streets to open roads. Meanwhile, the XL1200L offers a bit more punch with its 1200cc engine, providing the added power for longer rides and more challenging terrains. Both models are incredibly reliable, which is crucial for someone like me who values dependability over flashy features.
The Importance of Customization
Another reason why I’ve grown so attached to both of my Sportsters is the opportunity they provide for customization. As someone who’s spent years refining my personal identity and beliefs, being able to mold my motorcycle to reflect my own style and tastes is deeply rewarding. Customizing the Sportster models allowed me to express myself in a way that feels personal and authentic. From adjusting the handlebars to changing the exhaust system, each modification made to the bike represents a piece of my journey — from my roots in Iran to my experiences as a leader in organizations like CAIR-Columbus and the Muslim Forum of Utah, to my conversion to Christianity and embrace of the conservative values that now guide my life. The simplicity of the bikes makes them ideal for customization. The parts are easy to work with, and there’s a vast aftermarket of components that fit these models. I’ve chosen modifications that reflect my personality, from the leather saddle to the blacked-out accents, transforming these motorcycles into an extension of myself. With every wrench I turn, I’m reminded of the importance of maintaining my own individuality, even in a world that often pressures us to conform.
A Testimony to Reliability
The one thing that stands out above all when I think about the 2009 Sportster models is their reliability. In my years of ownership, I have yet to experience a major mechanical failure. These bikes are built to last, much like the values I hold dear. There’s something comforting about knowing that when I mount the bike, it will start and run smoothly every time, regardless of the challenges I’ve faced in my life.As an individual who’s lived through many hardships — from political upheaval to personal transformation — the reliability of these bikes is a constant reminder that simplicity and strength often endure the test of time. Whether it’s the moments of peace I’ve found cruising along a desert highway or the bursts of joy I experience when hitting the open road, these bikes have been a steadfast companion, never letting me down.
Conclusion
Owning the 2009 Harley Davidson Sportster XL883L and XL1200L has been more than just a hobby for me — it’s been a journey. In them, I see a reflection of my values: simplicity, reliability, and the freedom to be true to oneself. These bikes have allowed me to find clarity in a complex world, just as my conversion to Christianity has provided clarity and purpose after years of searching.
When I ride, I am reminded of the importance of craftsmanship, of taking pride in what you own, and of making choices that reflect who you truly are. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise of life, but with the roar of the Harley beneath me, I am reminded of the power of simplicity, and the joy that comes with riding a machine that’s built to last.
