By Bobby Darvish, Iranian-American Ex-Muslim, Former Vegan, Former Democrat, Former Socialist, Former CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Former Muslim Forum of Utah President, Former Pagan, Christian Conservative LDS Priest
I never imagined that my journey would take me from being an ardent socialist and an executive director of CAIR to becoming a devout Christian conservative. But as someone who has experienced the ideological depths of socialism and its devastating consequences firsthand, I am compelled to expose how fascism and socialism—often wrongly characterized as opposites—are at the very heart of what the left in America represents today.
Both fascism and socialism share a centralized, authoritarian approach that crushes individual liberties, weaponizes state power, and demands absolute conformity to its ideology. Having grown up under the authoritarian shadow of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I see striking parallels between these ideologies and the tactics employed by the American left, which masquerades as champions of equality and justice.
1. The Common DNA of Fascism and Socialism
Fascism and socialism stem from the same collectivist roots. While fascism wraps itself in nationalism and socialism in class struggle, both are totalitarian systems that reject the sovereignty of the individual in favor of the state. Benito Mussolini himself, the father of fascism, was a former Marxist who famously declared:
"All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
This philosophy aligns disturbingly well with the modern left in America, where dissenting opinions are crushed under the guise of "tolerance." Whether it’s through cancel culture or government overreach, the left enforces ideological purity with an iron fist.
2. The Left’s War on Individual Freedom
As an ex-Muslim and a former socialist, I recognize the left’s obsession with controlling every aspect of life. In Islam, conformity is demanded through Sharia law. Similarly, under socialism and fascism, personal liberties are sacrificed for the “greater good.”
The left in America today mirrors these systems by advocating for policies that obliterate individuality:
- Economic Centralization: Like socialism, the left seeks to redistribute wealth through punitive taxes and oppressive regulations. Their Green New Deal ambitions reflect the same centralized planning that has destroyed countless economies.
- Cultural Control: Fascist regimes in history controlled media and cultural institutions, just as leftists dominate Hollywood, academia, and the press today. The silencing of conservative voices on social media platforms is modern-day book burning.
- State Dependence: Socialism thrives on making citizens dependent on the government, just as the left pushes welfare programs that erode self-reliance and personal responsibility.
3. Identity Politics as the New Class Warfare
Socialism traditionally divided people by class, but the left has adapted this into the poisonous framework of identity politics. Instead of uniting people under shared values, the left divides them by race, gender, and sexual orientation, pitting Americans against each other to consolidate power. This mirrors the fascist obsession with scapegoats—whether it was Jews in Nazi Germany or other minority groups in Mussolini’s Italy.
As a former vegan, I also fell for this divisive narrative, believing that activism in the name of animals or the environment gave me moral superiority. It was only later, through Christianity, that I understood true unity comes from shared moral principles, not division.
4. The Left’s Alliance with Authoritarian Islamists
During my time with CAIR and the Muslim Forum of Utah, I witnessed firsthand how the American left aligned itself with Islamist groups. This alliance is built on a shared hatred for Western values, Christianity, and the nuclear family. Islamism, much like fascism, demands obedience and punishes dissent—an ethos the left seems to have adopted with enthusiasm.
From supporting Islamic regimes like Iran’s to enabling Sharia-compliant policies, the left has demonstrated its willingness to embrace authoritarianism under the guise of multiculturalism.
5. The Left’s Hypocrisy: From Big Tech to Big Brother
Ironically, the same leftists who decry “fascism” are the ones weaponizing corporations and the government against their political enemies. Big Tech’s suppression of dissent mirrors fascist censorship, while agencies like the FBI and DOJ have become tools of political persecution. The indictment of Donald Trump and the targeting of conservative Christians are not random; they are part of a larger strategy to consolidate power by silencing opposition.
6. Faith and Freedom: The Antidote to Fascism and Socialism
It was through my conversion to Christianity and my embrace of LDS teachings that I finally understood the power of individual freedom. The teachings of Jesus Christ emphasize the sanctity of free will—a stark contrast to the coercion of socialism and fascism.
The founding fathers of America, many of whom were Freemasons, designed a system rooted in God-given liberties, not government-granted rights. This is the true spirit of conservatism and the antithesis of what the left represents today.
Conclusion
The left in America has become the embodiment of the authoritarianism it claims to oppose. Whether through socialist economic policies, fascist cultural censorship, or alliances with Islamist regimes, the left is waging war on the values that made America great: faith, freedom, and individual responsibility.
As an Iranian-American, I have seen the devastating effects of these ideologies on my homeland. As a former socialist, I understand the seductive lies they tell. And as a Christian conservative, I am committed to standing against them with the truth. The stakes are too high to remain silent.
