As a Freemason and a motorcycle enthusiast, I’ve always admired the spirit of brotherhood and freedom embodied by motorcycle culture. Combining these ideals with the tenets of Freemasonry—charity, integrity, and the pursuit of enlightenment—gives rise to a unique expression of camaraderie: Freemason Motorcycle Clubs (MCs) and Riding Associations. In this article, I will explore the major Freemason-affiliated riding groups in the United States, their missions, and what they represent.
Freemasonry has long been associated with fostering brotherhood, and for many of us who love motorcycles, these clubs and associations provide a natural extension of Masonic values into the open road. Here's a closer look at some prominent Freemason motorcycle groups across America.
1. The Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association
The Widows Sons is the most well-known Freemason motorcycle organization. Founded in 1999, this group is open to Master Masons in good standing. With chapters across the United States and even internationally, the Widows Sons focus on charitable activities, supporting Masonic lodges, and promoting the Masonic Brotherhood. They often organize charity rides, raise funds for local causes, and encourage fellowship among Masons.
Their name comes from the biblical story of Hiram Abiff, the widow’s son, which holds significant meaning in Masonic teachings. Members of the Widows Sons wear distinctive patches featuring Masonic symbols like the square and compasses, often combined with motorcycle-related imagery.
2. Knights of Solomon Motorcycle Riding Club
The Knights of Solomon is another prominent Freemason-affiliated club. While similar to the Widows Sons, the Knights of Solomon emphasize the preservation of Masonic traditions and deeper exploration of esoteric teachings.
This club serves as a tight-knit community of Freemasons who share a passion for motorcycles, promoting Masonic ideals on their journeys while providing charity and support to their communities. They focus heavily on mentorship within the Masonic craft, encouraging younger Masons to join their ranks and benefit from fellowship.
3. The Ruffians Motorcycle Club
The Ruffians Motorcycle Club caters to Masons who share a love for riding but also want to engage in fraternal bonding. They are known for their dedication to both Freemasonry and the open-road lifestyle.
This club typically emphasizes active participation in lodge activities and encourages its members to remain deeply involved in Masonry while enjoying motorcycle culture. They combine charity events, rides, and social gatherings to strengthen the bonds between their members.
4. The Free Wheelers Masonic Motorcycle Club
While not as widely known as the Widows Sons or Knights of Solomon, the Free Wheelers have a strong presence in the Masonic motorcycle community. Based in the United States, they focus on fostering relationships between Freemasons and their families through motorcycling activities.
Their events are family-oriented, with rides and gatherings designed to include spouses and children, promoting the family values held dear in Freemasonry.
5. The Square and Compass Riders
The Square and Compass Riders are another Masonic motorcycle group known for combining the thrill of riding with the principles of Freemasonry. Their mission is to provide opportunities for charitable contributions while fostering fellowship among Freemasons who share a passion for motorcycles.
This group is open to Masons who ride all types of bikes, encouraging inclusivity while maintaining a strong connection to their lodges.
6. The Masonic Riders Guild
Unlike some of the other groups, the Masonic Riders Guild emphasizes both motorcycle touring and the study of Freemasonry’s philosophical teachings. Members often use their rides as opportunities for reflection, discussion, and the promotion of Masonic principles.
This guild maintains an active presence at regional and national Masonic gatherings, often organizing rides that coincide with significant Masonic events.
Freemasonry and Motorcycle Culture: A Natural Fit
The combination of Freemasonry and motorcycling is not coincidental. Both traditions emphasize brotherhood, independence, and the pursuit of truth. Freemason motorcycle clubs bring together individuals who value personal freedom while remaining committed to a higher moral code and service to others.
These groups represent a modern manifestation of the timeless Masonic principles of charity, integrity, and the search for wisdom. Whether riding to support a local lodge, raising funds for charity, or simply enjoying the open road with brothers, Freemason motorcycle clubs offer a unique and fulfilling way to live out the values of the Craft.
Conclusion
For Freemasons who are motorcycle enthusiasts, these clubs provide the perfect opportunity to blend two passions: the love for Freemasonry and the open road. As a Freemason and former socialist who has found deep meaning in the brotherhood of the Craft and the camaraderie of motorcycle riding, I find these organizations to be a powerful example of how our values can be carried into every aspect of life.
Whether you’re a Mason looking to join a club or simply curious about the intersection of these communities, I encourage you to explore these organizations. Freemasonry is about building ourselves into better men—and sometimes, that journey is best undertaken on two wheels.
