Best Trails to Hike in Millcreek Canyon, Utah: A Personal Perspective

Living in Utah has been a profound experience, both spiritually and physically. The breathtaking natural landscapes here, especially Millcreek Canyon, have become some of my favorite places for reflection and rejuvenation. As someone who once deeply immersed myself in a lifestyle of intense activism, whether as an ex-Muslim or a former socialist, I found solace in hiking through the mountains, allowing the quiet of nature to help me reconnect with both myself and my faith.

Millcreek Canyon, located just outside Salt Lake City, is one of Utah’s hidden gems. The diversity of its trails makes it perfect for anyone—whether you're a seasoned hiker, a beginner, or someone simply looking for a peaceful walk. Let me share some of the best trails in the canyon that have shaped my personal journey over the years.

1. Mill Creek Trail

This is the main trail that runs along the canyon floor and is perfect for those who are new to hiking or just want an easy-going experience. It’s a moderate 7.5-mile round trip that winds through beautiful forests, offering views of streams and wildlife. I’ve often walked this trail in the early mornings, reflecting on my past experiences and how far I've come—from my time at CAIR-Columbus and my presidency at the Muslim Forum of Utah to embracing my current beliefs as a Christian conservative member of the LDS faith. There's something deeply restorative about this trail, and it's a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Utah while contemplating life’s bigger questions.

2. Desolation Trail

For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, Desolation Trail is a perfect choice. It’s an 8-mile hike with significant elevation gain, taking you to the top of the canyon, where the views are nothing short of spectacular. The sweeping vistas of Salt Lake City below and the peaks of the Wasatch Mountains beyond make the strenuous climb worth it. As a former vegan, I found it invigorating to move beyond physical comfort zones—much like my journey out of my old ideologies. Every step up the trail felt like shedding old layers of my past, symbolically leaving behind those views that no longer served me.

3. Lake Blanche Trail

For a truly scenic and transformative hike, the Lake Blanche Trail is hard to beat. At around 6 miles round trip, this trail leads to a pristine alpine lake, surrounded by towering cliffs. It’s a moderate hike with stunning views of both the mountains and the lake. For me, Lake Blanche has become a place of solace—a place where I can reflect on my spiritual journey from being an Imam and leading others to Islam, to my eventual embrace of Christianity and my deeper understanding of the gospel as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Hiking here is an act of renewal, both physically and spiritually.

4. Big Water Trail

If you’re looking for a shorter yet still rewarding hike, the Big Water Trail might be for you. It’s about 4.5 miles round trip and offers a great view of the area’s natural beauty. This trail is a great option for those who are not looking for a long trek but still want to experience the peace of Millcreek Canyon. I’ve walked this trail with my family, sharing our stories of faith and perseverance, bonding over shared values of hard work and devotion.

5. Sunset Trail

As the name suggests, the Sunset Trail is best hiked in the evening hours, as it provides breathtaking views of the sunset over the valley. This moderate 5.5-mile trail allows for a peaceful escape into nature, offering an opportunity for quiet reflection as the sun sets behind the Wasatch Mountains. The calm of the trail reminds me of the importance of staying grounded, no matter what challenges we face. It's a reminder that peace can always be found through faith, humility, and respect for the natural world.

Conclusion: A Personal Sanctuary

Millcreek Canyon is not just a place to hike for me; it's a personal sanctuary. Over the years, as I transitioned away from my past affiliations, including my time with CAIR-Columbus and my role within the Muslim Forum of Utah, these trails have offered me the clarity and peace I needed to find my true path. As a Christian conservative, now deeply rooted in my LDS faith, I’ve come to appreciate not only the physical landscapes of Utah but the spiritual lessons they provide. Nature, in its quiet majesty, has a way of leading us toward deeper truths—whether we’re at peace with our beliefs or still in search of them.

For anyone visiting Utah or looking to explore Millcreek Canyon, I strongly encourage you to take the time to hike these trails. Whether you’re new to the area or a local like me, they offer something for everyone—peace, reflection, and a beautiful opportunity to connect with both nature and your innermost self.
